 ‘Smiling Hills’ accommodation is a separate cabin from the main house and provides a quality, affordable place to stay in the heart of this extraordinarily beautiful region. We are open all year. Staying here will give travellers a unique opportunity to explore the physical, spiritual and historical riches of the Slocan Valley, its lake and its surrounding mountains.

‘Smiling Hills’ is situated in the quiet hamlet of Hills alongside Highway 6 in the West Kootenay. Hills is 17km north of New Denver and 33km south of Nakusp. The eight acre property borders the Nakusp – Rosebery Railway, and provides an immediate safe cycling, running, walking and winter skiing route along the valley following Bonanza Creek.

During the winter, local ski trails are groomed by the Valhalla Hills Nordic Ski Club and ice fishing takes place on the local lakes. When the summer arrives, whatever your sport or interest the options are endless. That is why we live here.

  • There will always be room for cyclists who just stop by to pitch their tent. 
  • Pets are welcome through prior arrangement and deposit. The property is a tobacco free zone.

About Us

Tim & Natasha

‘Smiling Hills’ is owned and run by Tim and Natasha who have spent many years hiking, ski touring, cycling and travelling in the UK, Europe, Australasia and North America. They now live in this spectacular valley in British Columbia with their border collie dogs, Bonny and Tasky. They have a wealth of local knowledge acquired through exploring the front and back country. So come and eat breakfast to mountain views of Valhalla Provincial Park as you plan your day’s outing.

Smiling Hills rental and residence for  sale

Located in Hills, 17km north of New Denver, BC. This well maintained two storey family home sits at the top of 8 acres with landscaped yard and garden from which there are great mountain views of the Valhallas. A drive leads down to a flat field and forested area with immediate access to the Nakusp-Rosebery rail trail, perfect for biking, hiking, cross-country skiing or horse riding direct to Slocan and Summit Lakes. The spacious kitchen/living area leads onto a generous sized deck. Upstairs there are three bedrooms with two bathrooms, one of which is an ensuite. In addition there is a one bedroom guest house which has been operating as Smiling Hills B&B. A newly constructed 936sqft covered parking shelter provides high clearance for RVs.

In the summer take a kayak on the crystal clear Slocan Lake to view Sinixt First Nation rock paintings, hike up Idaho Peak or to the New Denver Glacier for spectacular views of Valhalla and Kokanee Glacier Provincial Parks, ride your trail bike along mapped trails, cross Carpenter Creek in a bucket chair, drive up to the former silver mining settlements of Sandon and Cody or take a breathtaking hike up Whitewater Canyon to the glacier with grizzlies grazing on the opposite valley side. If you play golf there are five courses within a 60km radius.


In the winter wax your cross-country skis and set off on the partially groomed old rail trails connecting Nakusp to New Denver to Kaslo, around Sandon or at Wensley Creek near Nakusp. Summit Lake ski hill offers good downhill skiing for families from Wednesdays – Sundays


To the south is Slocan Lake with the heritage village of New Denver, known as Eldorado in its mining heyday with its summer farmer markets and the home of the Nikkei Interment Memorial Centre National Historic Site. To the north is Summit Lake, with two campgrounds, and slightly further on are the hot springs of Halcyon and Nakusp.
